Record production estimates and weaker current-season acreage are not contradictory. They describe different crop years, stages and measures.

India’s latest agricultural numbers appear to point in opposite directions. The production estimates for 2025–26 are higher, but the area reported under kharif crops in the ongoing 2026–27 season is lower than at the corresponding point last year.

That is not necessarily a contradiction. The figures measure different periods and different things: estimated output from one agricultural year, and land sown so far in the next.

What improved in the 2025–26 production estimates?

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s Third Advance Estimates put total foodgrain production for 2025–26 at 3,765.63 lakh tonnes. That is 188.31 lakh tonnes above the 2024–25 estimate of 3,577.32 lakh tonnes.

The same release estimates:

  • rice production at 1,540.24 lakh tonnes;
  • wheat at 1,206.57 lakh tonnes;
  • maize at 550.93 lakh tonnes;
  • total oilseeds at 430.59 lakh tonnes; and
  • sugarcane at 5,000.63 lakh tonnes.

The ministry describes rice, wheat, maize, groundnut, rapeseed and mustard, and sugarcane production as being at record levels in these estimates. These are still advance estimates, however, rather than final production figures. The official release provides the crop-wise estimates and the comparison with 2024–25.

The useful conclusion is narrower than “every part of agriculture grew”. The national estimate shows higher aggregate production, but individual crops and local outcomes can move differently.

Does horticulture show the same direction?

Broadly, yes, though horticulture is reported through a separate estimate.

The Second Advance Estimates place horticultural production in 2025–26 at 3,777.76 lakh tonnes, up 1.90% from the final 2024–25 figure of 3,707.38 lakh tonnes. Estimated horticultural area changed only slightly, from 301.36 lakh hectares to 301.51 lakh hectares.

Within that total, fruit production is estimated at 1,214.75 lakh tonnes, an increase of 3.25%, while vegetable production is estimated at 2,210.00 lakh tonnes, an increase of 1.47%. Onion production is estimated marginally lower than in 2024–25, whereas potato and tomato production are estimated higher. The horticulture release lists these changes and identifies the crops contributing to them.

The relationship between area and output matters here. A small change in total horticultural area alongside a larger estimated rise in production suggests that acreage alone does not explain the national output figure. Crop mix and yield also affect production, although this release does not establish how much each factor contributed.

Why is current kharif acreage lower?

For the ongoing 2026–27 kharif season, the official report covering sowing up to 4 September 2026 records 1,086.31 lakh hectares, compared with 1,104.00 lakh hectares at the corresponding point in 2025. The reported difference is 17.69 lakh hectares.

Rice accounts for most of that gap. Reported rice area was 421.82 lakh hectares, against 438.19 lakh hectares at the comparable point a year earlier—a difference of 16.37 lakh hectares.

The pattern is not uniformly negative. Total pulses reached 117.13 lakh hectares, compared with 115.30 lakh hectares in the previous year. Coarse cereals, oilseeds, sugarcane and cotton were each below their corresponding 2025 area in the same report. The official coverage table gives the crop-wise comparisons.

This acreage report should not be read as a production forecast. It records progressive sowing area at a specified date. Harvested output will also depend on what happens after sowing, and the report itself does not quantify the eventual effect on production.

So, is Indian agriculture growing?

The defensible answer is: the latest completed-year advance estimates show higher national production, while the current kharif season’s progressive sowing data shows less area than at the same stage last year.

Both signals deserve attention, but they answer different questions. The 2025–26 figures describe estimated output across the agricultural year. The September 2026 figures are an early view of acreage in the following kharif season. Treating either one as a complete verdict on Indian agriculture would erase that distinction.

For anyone following the sector, the more useful approach is to keep three labels attached to every number: crop year, measurement date and whether it represents area or production. Those labels explain much of the apparent conflict in the current data.
