Copilot in India: Which Version Actually Fits Your Use?
Before choosing Copilot, check whose data it needs to use: personal files, web-grounded chat, or organisational work data.
The first question is not “Is Copilot free?”
In India, “Copilot” can refer to different access arrangements. Microsoft’s India page for Copilot in work apps says Copilot Chat is available at no additional cost for Microsoft Entra account users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. That is not the same as saying every Copilot feature is free.
Microsoft’s India pricing page describes a separate Microsoft 365 Copilot licence for capabilities connected to organisational work data and broader work-app use. The practical dividing line is therefore not the word “Copilot”; it is the account and data the task depends on.
Personal Microsoft 365 and work Copilot answer different needs
For personal use, Microsoft’s India plans page lists Microsoft 365 Personal at ₹689 per month or ₹6,899 per year. It lists Microsoft 365 Family at ₹819 per month or ₹8,199 per year. The page describes Copilot in apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
Family access needs a careful reading. The plan can cover up to six people, but Microsoft says the included AI features are currently available only to the subscription owner. So choosing Family because several people need Copilot would be an unsupported assumption; the stated sharing arrangement does not mean that every member receives the same AI access.
The useful choice depends on where the answer must come from
If the task is personal writing or editing inside the listed Microsoft 365 apps, the individual plans are the relevant comparison. If the need is secure, web-grounded chat through an eligible work account, Copilot Chat is the relevant starting point. If the answer must use organisational work data or work-app features, the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot route is the one Microsoft describes for that boundary.
This also explains why headline price comparisons can mislead. A personal plan, an eligible Copilot Chat entitlement and a paid work licence are not interchangeable versions of the same access. First identify whether the task uses personal app content, web-grounded chat or organisational data. Only then does it make sense to compare plans or ask whether an additional licence is needed.
For Copilot in India, that data boundary is the decision that matters most.
