Gemini in India: What Is It Good For, and What Should You Check First?

The short answer: Gemini is available in India, but “available” does not mean that every language, device, action or connected-data feature behaves the same way. The useful question is whether a particular task fits the access route and data boundary being chosen.

A supported country still has feature limits

Google’s Gemini Apps Help page lists India for web access and says the web app supports 70+ languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

The Android availability page also lists India, but marks Assamese, Odia and Punjabi with an asterisk in its India language list. Google says those marked languages do not support “Hey Google” voice commands and some Gemini action features.

That distinction matters. A language appearing on an availability list should not be read as a promise of identical hands-free or action support. For typed work, the first check is the language and app route. For voice-triggered actions, the asterisk is a real boundary, not a footnote.

The clearest India-specific use is a defined learning loop

Google’s 28 January 2026 India post describes full-length JEE Main practice tests in Gemini. It says a user can start by asking, “I want to take a JEE Main mock test.” After completion, Gemini provides immediate performance feedback, topic-level areas for improvement, explanations of correct answers and help creating a customised study plan. Google also says the test content comes from Physics Wallah and Careers360.

The useful insight is not that Gemini automatically replaces a teacher. It is that this feature has a defined job and defined outputs: attempt, feedback, explanations and a study plan. That gives a learner something concrete to inspect instead of relying on a vague promise of general tutoring. The official description does not amount to a guarantee that every answer will be correct, so the output still needs judgment.

Connecting Google services changes the question

Google announced Personal Intelligence in Gemini in India on 14 April 2026. With permission, it can connect to Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Google Search. The connections are optional and off by default; users can choose which apps to link and disable them. Google says the connected data is not directly used to train its models.

That convenience depends on granting Gemini a wider context. The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini may exchange chat, device and language preferences, location information, and content from connected services. It also says that disconnecting an app or deleting Gemini activity does not necessarily delete data that a connected service has already received.

So an answer based on mail, photos or history is a different privacy decision from a standalone prompt. Connect only the services needed for the task, rather than treating every available connection as part of the default setup.

Privacy settings are part of task selection

The Privacy Hub says Gemini Apps Activity is automatically deleted after 18 months by default. The available automatic-deletion choices include 3 months, 36 months or no automatic deletion. Google also says that a subset of chats may be reviewed by trained human reviewers, and reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years.

Temporary Chat is a narrower option. Google says it does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats and is not used to train Google’s AI models, but it may still be retained for 72 hours for service operation and safety. Temporary Chat cannot use Connected Apps, Gems, personalisation, saved information or feedback submission.

This creates a practical split. A task that needs Gmail or Photos cannot use the same connected-app context as Temporary Chat. A one-off question without personal context can stay separate from Connected Apps, but that does not mean zero retention. And a user relying on hands-free commands in Assamese, Odia or Punjabi should check the language limitation before assuming the action will work.

The decision in one line

For India, Gemini is not one uniform feature. Access is shaped by the web or mobile route and the chosen language; its value is clearest where the task has an explicit workflow, such as the JEE Main practice flow; and personalisation brings a separate connected-data decision.

The practical question is not “Can Gemini do everything?” It is: “What exactly am I asking it to access, which features does this language support, and which result can I evaluate?”
