Can Gemini set an alarm on an Android phone in India?

Why I looked this up

I wanted to understand something quite ordinary about AI: can I ask Gemini to set a phone alarm, rather than just get an explanation of how alarms work?

I checked Google’s own help pages rather than treating a trending phrase as evidence. This is a documentation-based note, not a claim that I tried it on a handset.

The short answer

Yes—with an Android-specific scope. Google lists India among the countries where the Gemini mobile app is available, and its Device assistance documentation explicitly includes managing alarms and timers. The alarm guidance does not state a separate India exclusion. That supports a documented capability, not a guarantee that every device or request will behave identically.

Google calls the connected app Device assistance, formerly Utilities. Its documented example requests include setting an alarm and showing existing alarms. What interested me more was where that request goes: Gemini is working with a Clock app, so the choice of app matters.

My checklist: which Clock app, and which action?

I pulled these distinctions from Google’s Device assistance guidance:

Applying that to an actual decision

Hypothetical example: suppose I have a Samsung phone with both its manufacturer’s Clock app and Google Clock installed. I ask Gemini to set an alarm for 7:00 am, then look in Google Clock to see whether it appeared.

Google’s documented routing changes that check: on Samsung, Gemini uses the manufacturer’s Clock app. I would therefore check that app rather than use Google Clock as my sole evidence that the request worked or failed.

The handset and request here are assumptions for the example. The manufacturer-specific routing is the verified rule. I am not claiming that an alarm was created or that it rang.

What I looked up next: does the phone have to be unlocked?

Google’s lock-screen guidance lists setting, stopping and snoozing alarms among the things Gemini can help with while an Android phone is locked, when lock-screen help is allowed. The relevant setting is Use Gemini without unlocking. Voice invocation also depends on “Hey Google” being enabled.

That is a separate condition from choosing a Clock app. In the hypothetical Samsung example, knowing which app receives an alarm does not tell me whether Gemini is allowed to handle my request from the lock screen.

Google also says some tasks still require unlocking, and specifically says a Pixel Tablet must be unlocked to use Gemini. I would not extend the phone guidance to that tablet or assume that every alarm-management action is covered by the three actions explicitly listed for the lock screen.

My takeaway is fairly narrow: Gemini has documented Android alarm controls available in the Indian market, but “AI can set an alarm” leaves out the two details I would actually check—the receiving Clock app and the permission to help while locked.
