Google’s AI test in India was not simply a new chatbot. AI Mode changed how Search handles complex questions, follow-ups, voice and images—while its links still need checking.

The phrase “Google AI test in India” sounds like it refers to one isolated experiment. Google’s own India announcements show something more specific: AI Mode began as a Search Labs experiment, moved into the wider Search experience, and then gained Indian-language and camera-based features.

On 24 June 2025, Google introduced AI Mode in India as an English-language experiment in Search Labs. The feature was designed for longer, more complex or nuanced questions, with the option to ask follow-up questions rather than start a new search each time. It also accepted voice input and images through Google Lens, and its responses included links to web information. (Google’s India announcement)

That combination is the important part. The experiment was not only about generating a paragraph under a search box. It tested a more conversational loop: explain the question, add context, inspect the response and continue. For a reader, this changes the useful question from “Can Google answer this?” to “Can I see which linked information supports the answer?”

When did the experiment become a wider Search feature?

On 8 July 2025, Google said AI Mode was rolling out across India without requiring Search Labs sign-up. The announcement described a new AI Mode tab in Google Search and in the Google app’s search bar. At that stage, the rollout was in English and supported typed questions, voice input, photos through Lens, follow-up questions and links to relevant webpages. (Google’s rollout announcement)

So calling it a “test” is accurate for the first launch, but incomplete for the product’s next stage. The key change was access: AI Mode was no longer described only as an opt-in Labs experiment. It became part of the regular Search experience being rolled out to users in India.

What did the India-specific expansion add?

On 8 October 2025, Google announced seven additional AI Mode languages for India: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The same announcement introduced Search Live in India in English and Hindi, allowing a back-and-forth interaction using voice and the camera, with links to supporting web information. (Google’s India update)

This matters because the input is no longer limited to a carefully written text query. A person can begin with a spoken question or something visible through the camera and continue the exchange. The practical benefit is not that every answer becomes reliable; it is that the search process can preserve more context while the question is being worked out.

What should a searcher trust in an AI Mode answer?

Google’s current Search Help page lists India among the supported locations for AI Mode, but its guidance also says that AI responses may contain mistakes. It recommends checking important information against the linked sources and other Search results. (Google Search Help)

That creates a useful boundary. AI Mode can help organise a complicated question, suggest a direction for further searching and make follow-up exploration easier. The linked pages remain the part to examine when a claim matters. A fluent response is an interface; it is not, by itself, proof.

The clearest answer to the original “test” question is therefore this: Google tested a more conversational, multimodal form of Search in India, then expanded it beyond the Labs setting and added languages and camera-led interaction. The product rollout explains how to access the feature. The supporting links—and the reader’s check of them—still determine whether a particular answer deserves confidence.
