Microsoft Teams in India: Which Plan Fits Your Actual Work?

Microsoft Teams is easy to reduce to meetings. The more useful question is what must happen around the meeting: only chat and calls, or company email, documents and Microsoft 365 apps as well?

Microsoft’s India pages currently list Teams Essentials at ₹115 per user per month, paid yearly, with GST extra. Microsoft 365 Business Basic is listed at ₹170 per user per month on an annual subscription, also before GST. The billing basis matters when comparing the two.

Is the requirement only Teams communication?

Teams Essentials is the narrower option. Microsoft’s India page lists chat, calls, video meetings, file sharing, tasks, polls, meeting recordings, transcripts and English live captions. It also lists 10 GB of cloud storage per user.

The same page states that meetings can have up to 300 participants and run for up to 30 hours. That gives a clear boundary for a Teams-focused requirement. It does not, however, make Essentials a replacement for a wider office setup.

The practical test is simple: if the requirement stops at Teams communication and the listed storage is sufficient, the additional Microsoft 365 services may not solve an actual problem.

What does Business Basic add beyond Teams?

Business Basic changes the scope of the subscription. Microsoft’s India business page lists Teams chat, calls and meetings alongside custom business email, 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage, SharePoint, and web and mobile versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. It also lists Planner, Forms and Bookings.

That means Business Basic is not merely a larger Teams plan. It places Teams inside a broader Microsoft 365 environment. The extra services matter when the same users need business email, shared documents and Microsoft’s web or mobile productivity apps. They matter less when those needs are already handled elsewhere.

There is one important boundary: Microsoft describes Business Basic as including web and mobile apps, not the desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. Choosing it on the assumption that installed Office apps are included would misread the plan.

Does the higher price automatically make Business Basic the better choice?

No. The official pages support a difference in included services, not a universal ranking.

A Teams-only requirement points towards the scope Microsoft lists for Essentials. A requirement for Teams plus custom email, 1 TB storage, SharePoint and web or mobile Office apps points towards Business Basic. That is a fit decision rather than a claim that one plan is best for every organisation.

The most useful question is therefore not Which Teams plan is best? It is Where do email, documents and everyday office apps need to live? Answering that first makes the India pricing comparison much easier to interpret. Both listed prices are annual-billing figures and GST is extra, so they should be read as the plan comparison rather than the final tax-inclusive amount.
