RBI’s overnight cash withdrawal auction: what I could verify
An auction announcement is not an auction result. That distinction—and the date on the notice—became the main point of my search.
Why I looked this up
“RBI overnight cash withdrawal auction” caught my attention because I wanted to know what the official announcement actually called it, and whether there was a current auction behind the phrase.
My search reached RBI notices using the term Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR). However, the relevant notices I could verify were from 2025. I could not establish a current auction from the official material returned, so this is a limited research note—not confirmation of a fresh RBI operation.
What I could establish
The RBI notice published on 6 August 2025 announced an overnight VRRR auction under LAF for 7 August 2025. It listed a notified amount of ₹50,000 crore, a one-day tenor, and a reversal date of 8 August 2025.
Those details describe that particular historical announcement. They do not establish the amount, dates or terms of any current auction. I also would not turn “notified amount” into a claim that the entire amount was actually absorbed: the source is an announcement, not the auction result.
My checklist for reading an auction claim
I found it useful to separate the fields rather than treating the phrase as a complete explanation:
| What I check | How I use it |
|---|---|
| Publication and auction dates | Establish which event the notice concerns before calling it current. |
| Official operation name | Preserve RBI’s wording instead of relying on “cash withdrawal” as the technical description. |
| Tenor and reversal date | Read the duration from that notice, rather than assume every VRRR auction is overnight. |
| Notified amount | Record the announced size without presenting it as an actual auction outcome. |
| Announcement versus result | Leave the outcome unconfirmed unless a corresponding result is available. |
This is my reading checklist, not an eligibility guide or a procedure for participating in an auction.
What I looked up next
I wanted to check whether “overnight” was interchangeable with VRRR. A separate RBI notice published on 24 June 2025 announced a seven-day VRRR auction for 27 June 2025, with a notified amount of ₹1,00,000 crore and a reversal date of 4 July 2025.
That comparison helped me separate the operation’s name from its duration. The August notice specified overnight; the June notice specified seven days. I would not transfer either notice’s terms to another auction.
Where my research stops
The evidence here consists of two historical RBI announcements. Neither verifies a current auction, its result, or an effect on an individual bank account. I am keeping those gaps explicit rather than attaching old figures to a newly encountered phrase.
