What U, UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, A and S Film Ratings Mean in India

The direct answer

India’s Central Board of Film Certification currently lists six certificate labels: U, UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, A and S. The three numbered UA labels are recommendatory parental-guidance markers. They are not the same kind of audience restriction as A or S.

The current CBFC ratings at a glance

The CBFC FAQ lists U, UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, A and S. Here is how I would read them:

The official Government release on the 2024 certification rules expressly calls the three age-based UA markers recommendatory. The Cinematograph Act supplies the broader distinction between unrestricted exhibition, adult-only exhibition and exhibition limited to a profession or class of persons.

How to read the certificate before booking

I now use this order rather than treating all six labels as one age ladder:

1. Read the letter first. U and UA permit unrestricted public exhibition; A and S restrict the certified audience.
2. If it is UA, read the number. A parent or guardian is asked to consider suitability for a child below 7, 13 or 16.
3. Do not read the plus sign as an automatic cinema ban. The 2024 government release explicitly describes these UA markers as recommendatory.
4. If it is A, treat it as an adult-only certificate. This is a restriction, not guidance.
5. If it is S, identify the specified group. S is about a profession or class of persons, not a higher step on an age ladder.

Common misunderstandings

Where to verify a particular film

The CBFC FAQ says the certificate category must be shown in advertisements for films certified UA, A or S, including newspapers, hoardings, posters and trailers. Check the film’s certificate or official publicity rather than inferring a rating from genre, cast or artwork.

I also would not read U as a personal guarantee that every viewer will be comfortable with a film. What the official category says is that public exhibition is unrestricted. Similarly, a UA marker does not make the decision for a family: it identifies the threshold below which the parent or guardian is asked to consider the child’s viewing.
